Football Injuries: Treatment & Prevention

As referees’ whistles are once again heard across London’s parks this Winter, Dr Andrew Greenland, a Chiswick based London Osteopath, highlights some of the injuries likely to face amateur football players in the coming weeks.

Nearly three quarters of all football injuries occur to the lower half of the body during player contact.  This can be down to normal contact during tackling or during over the top fouling. Of injuries sustained, sprains and strains are without doubt the most common.  Many amateur footballers will return to the sport without a proper rehabilitation process. This can lead to increased susceptibility to future injuries, which can mean longer lay-offs than if the original condition was treated properly in the first instance.

By utilising a highly qualified osteopath, footballers can help themselves to fully recover from injuries first time round, and by building strength as part of the rehabilitation process, they can potentially come back stronger than prior to their injury.  An Osteopath will also look beyond the injury site to identify any other areas of dysfunction that may have contributed to the original injury, or that may have occurred as a compensatory mechanism following the injury.

An osteopath can also conduct a biomechanical assessment to identify muscle imbalances and weaknesses.  These areas can then be targeted to improve strength and general fitness, and thereby reduce the risk of future injuries.
